Getting There: Take I-94 to N. River Rd. exit, go east towards Harrison Township. Go two miles and turn left on Conger Bay Dr. Go over the bridge and look for Blue Lagoon and Detroit Kiteboarding on your right. Scenario: Expansive shallow riding area that works well on northerly and easterly winds. A large lawn allows ample room for kite rigging and launching. Sketchy launch.
Local Knowledge: To use the Blue Lagoon you must purchase a Windsports Club membership and car sticker for $25. These are available at the marina office or at Detroit Kiteboarding. Restrooms on premises, located next to the shop. Please drive slowly through the marina yard and be respectful to boat owners. Take care not to obstruct the rigging and launching area when parking. Do not ride back and forth across the boat channels. Cross over and stay there especially when there is lots of weekend traffic.
The large lawn creates a nice space to rig kites. Please take care to roll up your lines when not immediately launching your kite.
Experienced kiters prefer to launch their kites on the lawn and then walk out onto the water via a 10 ft. wide walkway through the broken concrete retaining wall.
Often times an assisted launch out on the water or a drift launch are much safer than launching inland, especially for newer kiters. Beginners can walk their kites out the 'windsurf launch' and drift launch off the point. It is shallow out there and you can stay away from the rocky shoreline. New kiters should walk waaaaay upwind and get away from the shoreline, save your kite and your face. Do not linger near the water access point with your kite at 12:00, space is limited here. Don't create congestion at the bottleneck!
